The photo above is the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, Anatolia, now part of Selçuk, Turkey. Built circa 114–117 A.D. The library was built to store 12,000 scrolls.
Libraries have for centuries provided resources to the community while also preserving stories, important documents, and research materials. Cultures remain strong when they support storytelling, research, and history, encourage the sharing of conflicting opinions, and put ideas and ingenuity over idols. Those communities who let that whither and atrophy become weathering relics visited by tourists. We learn from the errors captured in our history.
With history in mind, it is wonderful to be celebrating National Library Week with Mugglenet!
